GUSI @ American Geophysical Union in DC!
This week, GUSI students Owen Chbani, Anna Kelly, Belinda Li, Jackson Schnabel, and Vaibhavi Mahajan attended the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Annual Meeting, which attracted over 30,000 Earth and space scientists, students, policymakers, and advocates from around the world. During the event, GUSI students participated in discussions about the latest developments in space sciences, attended NASA Town Halls, and showcased two of their own independent research projects.
The first project, Regulating the Emerging Environmental Effects of Spacecraft Re-Entry in the Science for Policy: Case Studies, was presented publicly by Co-President Anna Kelly . The research project featured an impressive group of contributing authors: Nico Iraj Baumann, Katherine Chow, Yael L. Diamond, Yajat Gupta, Kaylin Kim, Aegus Kim, Shuai Li, Belinda Li, David Longfoot, Luke Madden, Vaibhavi Mahajan, and Jackson Schnabel! GUSI is excited to share that the team is planning to submit this research for publication in Spring 2025. Stay tuned for updates!
The second project, Space Systems as the 17th Critical Infrastructure Sector, n which explores the growing cybersecurity risks to the space economy. The research was presented via poster, and featured a team of Vaibhavi Mahajan, Belinda Li, Jackson Schnabel, and Anna Kelly. Designating space systems as critical infrastructure designation would enable the U.S. government to provide actionable intelligence, protection, and threat management to secure the growth of the American aerospace industry.
Thank you to the organizers of AGU24 for an incredible conference. We can’t wait to see what’s next for Earth and Space Science. Come back to DC soon!
